Cefotaxime Sodium for Injection

[Indications]
Cefotaxime is indicated for the treatment of a wide variety of infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive, Gram-negative and anaerobic organisms.
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Skin and skin structure infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Uncomplicated gonorrhea
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Bacterial septicemia/bacteremia
- Bone and joint infections
- CNS (meningitis, ventriculitis)
- Surgical prophylaxis
- Intra-abdominal infections
Treatment should be continued for minimum of 10 days for group A beta-hemolytic streptococci infections to minimize the risk of glomerulonephritis or rheumatic fever. The IV route is preferable for clients with severe of life-threatening infections; for clients after surgery; of for those manifesting malnutrition, trauma, malignancy, heart failure, of diabetes, especially if shock is present or possible. Used with aminoglycosides for gram-positive of gram-negative sepsis where the causative agent has not been identified.
[Dosage and administration]
For adults
- Uncomplicated infections: IV or IM 1g every 12 hours.
- Moderate to severe infections: 1~2g every 8 hours.
- Septicemia: IV 2g every 6~8 hours.
- Life-threatening infections: IV 2g every 4 hours, not more than 12g per day
- Gonorrhea: IM single dose of 1g.
- Preoperative prophylaxis: 1g, 30~90 minutes prior to surgery.
Pediatric, 1 month to 12 years, IM or IV 50~180mg/kg/day in 4~6 divided doses; 1~4 weeks, IV 50mg/kg per 8 hours; 0~1 week, IV 50mg/kg per 12 hours. |
